Summer in Europe runs from mid-June to early September. July is peak season: southern Europe is at its hottest, central Rome hotels charge their top rates, and the Colosseum queue builds early in the morning. The Mediterranean coast is shoulder-to-shoulder. You want to swim in Croatia in August? Expect 50 people per meter of beach.
But here is the truth: you do not need to suffer. The Nordic countries (Sweden, Norway, Iceland) stay mild at 18, 25°C, with 18, 20 hours of daylight. Poland and the Czech Republic see one third fewer tourists than Italy. A good meal in Kraków costs 12 EUR. In Venice the same plate costs far more.

What Changes in Summer 2027
A total solar eclipse reaches the far south of Spain on 2 August 2027, with totality in cities such as Cádiz and Málaga, on a path that also crosses Morocco, Algeria, Libya and Egypt. Book early if you want a room in the Spanish towns under the path of totality. Border checks have changed too: since 10 April 2026 the EU Entry/Exit System (EES) is fully operational. It registers non-EU short-stay travellers at the external borders of 29 European countries and replaces passport stamping. ETIAS, the travel authorisation for visa-exempt visitors, whose fee has been set at EUR 20, was still not in operation on 30 September 2026, and the EU says it will announce the start date several months before launch, so check travel-europe.europa.eu before your trip. La Tomatina in Buñol is held on the last Wednesday of August, which in 2027 falls on 25 August.
Practical Warnings
Trains in France and Italy sell out two weeks in advance in summer. Book TGV or Frecciarossa tickets by June 1. The Eiffel Tower elevator queue is 2.5 hours at 11 a.m. Go at 8:30 a.m. or skip the climb. Barcelona's La Sagrada Familia entry is 21 EUR but you need a timed slot booked online. Cash is still king in rural Greece and Portugal. Pickpockets operate on Line 1 of the Paris Metro and on Rome's 64 bus. Keep your wallet in a front zip pocket.
Late August is the sweet spot. Schools in northern Europe start again, crowds thin by 30%, and hotel rates drop 15, 25%. The sea is warmest then. Do that.
