EES: already in place for your 2027 trip
The Entry/Exit System (EES) started its progressive roll-out on 12 October 2025 and became fully operational on 10 April 2026. It registers non-EU nationals travelling for a short stay each time they cross the external borders of the 29 European countries that use it.
It records your name, travel document data, fingerprints, a facial image, and the date and place of each entry and exit, and it also records refusals of entry. As of 10 April 2026 it replaces the stamping of passports and allows the automatic detection of overstayers.
In practice, expect a biometric registration at your first crossing of an external border, with fingerprints and a photo, and keep track of your days in the area.
ETIAS: announced, not running yet
ETIAS is a travel authorisation for visa-exempt travellers from 59 countries who visit 30 European countries for a short stay. Today the official line is clear: ETIAS is currently not in operation and no applications for travel authorisations are being collected. The EU says it will announce the specific start date several months before launch, so today there is no official start date for ETIAS.
The ETIAS fee has been set at EUR 20, instead of the EUR 7 previously planned, and it will only apply once ETIAS is operational. Once the system goes live, you will apply through an official website or mobile app.
What to do before a 2027 trip to Europe
- Check the official EU travel site before you book, never a third-party ETIAS site.
- Do not pay anyone for an ETIAS application today, because the EU is not collecting any.
- Leave extra time at your first border crossing, since EES registration takes fingerprints and a photo.
- Count your days in the area. A short stay means up to 90 days within any 180-day period.
